One car traveled, on average, 8 miles per hour faster than the other car Let x = speed of slower car (in miles per hour) So, x + 8 = speed of faster car (in miles per hour)

This is an expanding gap question The distance between cars EXPANDS at a rate of x + x + 8 miles per hour Simplify: the rate of expansion = 2x + 8 miles per hour
distance = (time)(rate) We can write: 208 = (2)(2x + 8) Expand: 208 = 4x + 16 Subtract 16 from both sides: 192 = 4x Solve: x = 48
The slower car traveled at 48 miles per hour The faster car traveled at 56 miles per hour
