Summary: We had a duplicate copy of the code for --make and for -c which was a pain. The call graph looked something like this: compileOne -> genericHscCompileGetFrontendResult -> genericHscFrontend hscCompileOneShot ---^ with genericHscCompileGetFrontendResult and hscCompileOneShot duplicating logic for deciding whether or not recompilation was needed. This patchset fixes it, so now everything goes through this call-chain: compileOne (--make entry point) Calls hscIncrementCompile, invokes the pipeline to do codegen and sets up linkables. hscIncrementalCompile (-c entry point) Calls hscIncrementalFrontend, and then simplifying, desugaring, and writing out the interface. hscIncrementalFrontend Performs recompilation avoidance, if recompilation needed, does parses typechecking. I also cleaned up some of the MergeBoot nonsense by introducing a FrontendResult type. NB: this BREAKS #8101 again, because I can't unconditionally desugar due to Haddock barfing on lint, see #10600 Signed-off-by:

The Windows preprocessor code calls `runInteractiveProcess` but does not check if an exception is thrown. `runInteractiveProcess` calls `CreateProcess` which when given a format the system loader does not know about will throw an exception. This is what makes #9399 fail. Ultimately we should not use any `CreateProcess` based calls but instead `ShellExecuteEx` as this would allow us to run applications that the shell knows about instead of just the loader. More details on #365. This patch removes `PhaseFailed` and throws `ProgramError` instead. `PhaseFailed` was largely unneeded since it never gave very useful information aside from the `errorcode` which was almost always `1`. `IOErrors` have also been eliminated and `GhcExceptions` thrown in their place wherever possible. Updates haddock submodule. Test Plan: `./validate` to make sure anything didn't break and `make TESTS="T365"` to test that an error is now properly thrown Reviewers: austin, thomie, bgamari Reviewed By: thomie, bgamari Subscribers: #ghc_windows_task_force Differential Revision: https://phabricator.haskell.org/D1256 GHC Trac Issues: #365

Summary: hs-boot declarations were leaking into the EPS due to self {-# SOURCE #-} imports, and interface loading induced by orphan instances. For the former, we simply disallow self {-# SOURCE #-} imports; for the latter, we simply just don't load an interface if it would be ourself. Signed-off-by:

`.hspp` and `.hscpp` are haskell files that have already been preprocessed. Treat `.hspp` and `.hscpp` as Haskellish sources again, as they were before commit a10e1990. This way, ghc --make will load their imports. Make sure that `.cmm` and `.cmmcpp` are still not treated as Haskellish, by moving them out of `haskell_src_suffixes` (but still keeping them in haskellish_suffixes, though I'm not sure what the purpose of that group is). Parsing of static and mode flags happens before any session is started, i.e., before the first call to 'GHC.withGhc'. Therefore, to report errors for invalid usage of these two types of flags, we can not call any function that needs DynFlags, as there are no DynFlags available yet (unsafeGlobalDynFlags is not set either). So we always print "on the commandline" as the location, which is true except for Api users, which is probably ok. When reporting errors for invalid usage of dynamic flags we /can/ make use of DynFlags, and we do so explicitly in DynFlags.parseDynamicFlagsFull. Before, we called unsafeGlobalDynFlags when an invalid (combination of) flag(s) was given on the commandline, resulting in panics (#9963). This regression was introduced in 1d6124de. Also rename showSDocSimple to showSDocUnsafe, to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Reviewed By: austin Differential Revision: https://phabricator.haskell.org/D730 GHC Trac Issues: #9963

By passing -O2, the bug appears depending on the order of clauses in "solve", hence adding T9938B as the other variant. Currently, T9938 is marked as broken, but maybe the bug is actually in T9938B, where something (possibly inlining, as suggested by rwbarton) affected the requirement to link against transformers.

Summary: Amazingly, the fix for this very old bug is quite simple: when type-checking, maintain a set of "visible orphan modules" based on the orphans list of modules which we explicitly imported. When we import an instance and it is an orphan, we check if it is in the visible modules set, and if not, ignore it. A little bit of refactoring for when orphan-hood is calculated happens so that we always know if an instance is an orphan or not. For GHCi, we preinitialize the visible modules set based on the list of interactive imports which are active. Future work: Cache the visible orphan modules set for GHCi, rather than recomputing it every type-checking round. (But it's tricky what to do when you /remove/ a module: you need a data structure a little more complicated than just a set of modules.) Signed-off-by:
