      Summary:

      similar functionality is now available
      with -ddump-to-file -ddump-splices
      
      However, users are already accustomed to -ddump-splices
      having a particular format, and this format is not completely valid code
      The goal of -th-file is to dump valid Haskell code
      
      Additionally, the convention of -ddump-to-file is to name the file after
      the flag, so the file is .dump-splices
      Given that the goal of the new flag is to generate valid Haskell,
      The extension should be .hs
      
      Additionally, -ddump-to-file effects all other dump flags
      
      Test Plan:
      look at the output of using the -th-file flag
      and compare it to the output of using -ddump-to-file and -ddump-splices
      I want to add test cases, but just need some pointers on getting started there

      Major patch to add -fwarn-redundant-constraints · 32973bf3

      The idea was promted by Trac #9939, but it was Christmas, so I did
      some recreational programming that went much further.
      
      The idea is to warn when a constraint in a user-supplied context is
      redundant.  Everything is described in detail in
        Note [Tracking redundant constraints]
      in TcSimplify.
      
      Main changes:
      
       * The new ic_status field in an implication, of type ImplicStatus.
         It replaces ic_insol, and includes information about redundant
         constraints.
      
       * New function TcSimplify.setImplicationStatus sets the ic_status.
      
       * TcSigInfo has sig_report_redundant field to say whenther a
         redundant constraint should be reported; and similarly
         the FunSigCtxt constructor of UserTypeCtxt
      
       * EvBinds has a field eb_is_given, to record whether it is a given
         or wanted binding. Some consequential chagnes to creating an evidence
         binding (so that we record whether it is given or wanted).
      
       * AbsBinds field abs_ev_binds is now a *list* of TcEvBiinds;
         see Note [Typechecking plan for instance declarations] in
         TcInstDcls
      
       * Some significant changes to the type checking of instance
         declarations; Note [Typechecking plan for instance declarations]
         in TcInstDcls.
      
       * I found that TcErrors.relevantBindings was failing to zonk the
         origin of the constraint it was looking at, and hence failing to
         find some relevant bindings.  Easy to fix, and orthogonal to
         everything else, but hard to disentangle.
      
      Some minor refactorig:
      
       * TcMType.newSimpleWanteds moves to Inst, renamed as newWanteds
      
       * TcClassDcl and TcInstDcls now have their own code for typechecking
         a method body, rather than sharing a single function. The shared
         function (ws TcClassDcl.tcInstanceMethodBody) didn't have much code
         and the differences were growing confusing.
      
       * Add new function TcRnMonad.pushLevelAndCaptureConstraints, and
         use it
      
       * Add new function Bag.catBagMaybes, and use it in TcSimplify

      Previously it was a SrcSpan, which can be an UnhelpulSrcSpan,
      but actually for TcLclEnv and CtLoc we always know it is
      a real source location, and it's good to make the types
      reflect that fact.
      
      There is a continuing slight awkwardness (not new with this
      patch) about what "file name" to use for GHCi code.  Current
      we say "<interactive>" which seems just about OK.

      Previously we were capturing the *entire environment* when moving under
      a 'proc', for the newArrowScope/escapeArrowScope thing.  But that a blunderbuss,
      and in any case isn't right (the untouchable-type-varaible invariant gets
      invalidated).
      
      So I fixed it to be much more refined: just the LocalRdrEnv and constraints are
      captured.
      
      I think this is right; but if not we should just add more fields to ArrowCtxt,
      not return to the blunderbuss.
      
      This patch fixes the ASSERT failure in Trac #5267

      Summary:
      Amazingly, the fix for this very old bug is quite simple: when type-checking,
      maintain a set of "visible orphan modules" based on the orphans list of
      modules which we explicitly imported.  When we import an instance and it
      is an orphan, we check if it is in the visible modules set, and if not,
      ignore it.  A little bit of refactoring for when orphan-hood is calculated
      happens so that we always know if an instance is an orphan or not.
      
      For GHCi, we preinitialize the visible modules set based on the list of
      interactive imports which are active.
      
      Future work: Cache the visible orphan modules set for GHCi, rather than
      recomputing it every type-checking round.  (But it's tricky what to do when you
      /remove/ a module: you need a data structure a little more complicated than
      just a set of modules.)

      Rejig builders for pattern synonyms, especially unlifted ones · e8762081

      When a pattern synonym is for an unlifted pattern, its "builder" would
      naturally be a top-level unlifted binding, which isn't allowed.  So we
      give it an extra Void# argument.
      
      Our Plan A involved then making *two* Ids for these builders, with
      some consequential fuss in the desugarer.  This was more pain than I
      liked, so I've re-jigged it.
      
       * There is just one builder for a pattern synonym.
      
       * It may have an extra Void# arg, but this decision is signalled
         by the Bool in the psBuilder field.
      
         I did the same for the psMatcher field.
      
         Both Bools are serialised into interface files, so there is
         absolutely no doubt whether that extra Void# argument is required.
      
       * I renamed "wrapper" to "builder".  We have too may "wrappers"
      
       * In order to deal with typecchecking occurrences of P in expressions,
         I refactored the tcInferId code in TcExpr.
      
      All of this allowed me to revert 5fe872
         "Apply compulsory unfoldings during desugaring, except for `seq` which is special."
      which turned out to be a rather messy hack in DsBinds

      Summary:
      Module signatures, like hs-boot files, are Haskell modules which omit
      value definitions and contain only signatures.  This patchset implements
      one particular aspect of module signature, namely compiling them against
      a concrete implementation.  It works like this: when we compile an hsig
      file, we must be told (via the -sig-of flag) what module this signature
      is implementing.  The signature is compiled into an interface file which
      reexports precisely the entities mentioned in the signature file.  We also
      verify that the interface is compatible with the implementation.
      
      This feature is useful in a few situations:
      
          1. Like explicit import lists, signatures can be used to reduce
          sensitivity to upstream changes.  However, a signature can be defined
          once and then reused by many modules.
      
          2. Signatures can be used to quickly check if a new upstream version
          is compatible, by typechecking just the signatures and not the actual
          modules.
      
          3. A signature can be used to mediate separate modular development,
          where the signature is used as a placeholder for functionality which
          is loaded in later.  (This is only half useful at the moment, since
          typechecking against signatures without implementations is not implemented
          in this patchset.)
      
      Unlike hs-boot files, hsig files impose no performance overhead.
      
      This patchset punts on the type class instances (and type families) problem:
      instances simply leak from the implementation to the signature.  You can
      explicitly specify what instances you expect to have, and those will be checked,
      but you may get more instances than you asked for.  Our eventual plan is
      to allow hiding instances, but to consider all transitively reachable instances
      when considering overlap and soundness.
      
      ToDo: signature merging: when a module is provided by multiple signatures
      for the same base implementation, we should not consider this ambiguous.
      
      ToDo: at the moment, signatures do not constitute use-sites, so if you
      write a signature for a deprecated function, you won't get a warning
      when you compile the signature.
      
      Future work: The ability to feed in shaping information so that we can take
      advantage of more type equalities than might be immediately evident.

      Summary:
      This includes pretty much all the changes needed to make `Applicative`
      a superclass of `Monad` finally. There's mostly reshuffling in the
      interests of avoid orphans and boot files, but luckily we can resolve
      all of them, pretty much. The only catch was that
      Alternative/MonadPlus also had to go into Prelude to avoid this.
      
      As a result, we must update the hsc2hs and haddock submodules.

      In some cases, the layout of the LANGUAGE/OPTIONS_GHC lines has been
      reorganized, while following the convention, to
      
      - place `{-# LANGUAGE #-}` pragmas at the top of the source file, before
        any `{-# OPTIONS_GHC #-}`-lines.
      
      - Moreover, if the list of language extensions fit into a single
        `{-# LANGUAGE ... -#}`-line (shorter than 80 characters), keep it on one
        line. Otherwise split into `{-# LANGUAGE ... -#}`-lines for each
        individual language extension. In both cases, try to keep the
        enumeration alphabetically ordered.
        (The latter layout is preferable as it's more diff-friendly)
      
      While at it, this also replaces obsolete `{-# OPTIONS ... #-}` pragma
      occurences by `{-# OPTIONS_GHC ... #-}` pragmas.

      Trac #8985 showed up a major shortcoming in the kind unifier: it was
      ignoring untoucability.  This has unpredictably-bad consequences;
      notably, the skolem-escape check can fail.
      
      There were two things wrong
       * TcRnMonad.isTouchableTcM was returning a constant value for kind variables
         (wrong), and even worse the constant was back-to-front (it was always False).
      
       * We weren't even calling isTouchableTcM in TcType.unifyKindX.
      
      I'm not sure how this ever worked.
      
      Merge to 7.8.3 in due course.

      This patch implements Pattern Synonyms (enabled by -XPatternSynonyms),
      allowing y ou to assign names to a pattern and abstract over it.
      
      The rundown is this:
      
        * Named patterns are introduced by the new 'pattern' keyword, and can
          be either *unidirectional* or *bidirectional*. A unidirectional
          pattern is, in the simplest sense, simply an 'alias' for a pattern,
          where the LHS may mention variables to occur in the RHS. A
          bidirectional pattern synonym occurs when a pattern may also be used
          in expression context.
      
        * Unidirectional patterns are declared like thus:
      
              pattern P x <- x:_
      
          The synonym 'P' may only occur in a pattern context:
      
              foo :: [Int] -> Maybe Int
              foo (P x) = Just x
              foo _     = Nothing
      
        * Bidirectional patterns are declared like thus:
      
              pattern P x y = [x, y]
      
          Here, P may not only occur as a pattern, but also as an expression
          when given values for 'x' and 'y', i.e.
      
              bar :: Int -> [Int]
              bar x = P x 10
      
        * Patterns can't yet have their own type signatures; signatures are inferred.
      
        * Pattern synonyms may not be recursive, c.f. type synonyms.
      
        * Pattern synonyms are also exported/imported using the 'pattern'
          keyword in an import/export decl, i.e.
      
              module Foo (pattern Bar) where ...
      
          Note that pattern synonyms share the namespace of constructors, so
          this disambiguation is required as a there may also be a 'Bar'
          type in scope as well as the 'Bar' pattern.
      
        * The semantics of a pattern synonym differ slightly from a typical
          pattern: when using a synonym, the pattern itself is matched,
          followed by all the arguments. This means that the strictness
          differs slightly:
      
              pattern P x y <- [x, y]
      
              f (P True True) = True
              f _             = False
      
              g [True, True] = True
              g _            = False
      
          In the example, while `g (False:undefined)` evaluates to False,
          `f (False:undefined)` results in undefined as both `x` and `y`
          arguments are matched to `True`.

      The basic idea here is simple, and described in Note [The interactive package]
      in HscTypes, which starts thus:
      
          Note [The interactive package]

          Type and class declarations at the command prompt are treated as if
          they were defined in modules
             interactive:Ghci1
             interactive:Ghci2
             ...etc...
          with each bunch of declarations using a new module, all sharing a
          common package 'interactive' (see Module.interactivePackageId, and
          PrelNames.mkInteractiveModule).
      
          This scheme deals well with shadowing.  For example:
      
             ghci> data T = A
             ghci> data T = B
             ghci> :i A
             data Ghci1.T = A  -- Defined at <interactive>:2:10
      
          Here we must display info about constructor A, but its type T has been
          shadowed by the second declaration.  But it has a respectable
          qualified name (Ghci1.T), and its source location says where it was
          defined.
      
          So the main invariant continues to hold, that in any session an original
          name M.T only refers to oe unique thing.  (In a previous iteration both
          the T's above were called :Interactive.T, albeit with different uniques,
          which gave rise to all sorts of trouble.)
      
      This scheme deals nicely with the original problem.  It allows us to
      eliminate a couple of grotseque hacks
        - Note [Outputable Orig RdrName] in HscTypes
        - Note [interactive name cache] in IfaceEnv
      (both these comments have gone, because the hacks they describe are no
      longer necessary). I was also able to simplify Outputable.QueryQualifyName,
      so that it takes a Module/OccName as args rather than a Name.
      
      However, matters are never simple, and this change took me an
      unreasonably long time to get right.  There are some details in
      Note [The interactive package] in HscTypes.

      The root cause of #8450 is that the new Template Haskell story, with
      the renamer doing more of the work of Template Haskell, wasn't dealing
      correctly with the keepAlive problem.  Consider
          g = ..blah...
          f = [| g |]
      Then f's RHS refers to g's name but not to g, so g was being discarded
      as dead code.
      
      Fixing this sucked me into a deep swamp of understanding how all the moving
      parts of hte new Template Haskell fit together, leading to a large collection
      of related changes and better documentation.  Specifically:
      
      * Instead of putting the TH level of a binder in the LocalRdrEnv, there
        is now a separate field
            tcl_th_bndrs :: NameEnv (TopLevelFlag, ThLevel)
        in the TcLclEnv, which records for each binder
           a) whether it is syntactically a top-level binder or not
           b) its TH level
        This deals uniformly with top-level and non-top-level binders, which was
        previously dealt with via greviously-delicate meddling with Internal and
        External Names.  Much better.
      
      * As a result I could remove the tct_level field of ATcId.
      
      * There are consequential changes in TcEnv too, which must also extend the
        level bindings.  Again, more clarity.
      
        I renamed TcEnv.tcExtendTcTyThingEnv to tcExtendKindEnv2, since it's only used
        during kind inference, for (AThing kind) and APromotionErr; and that is
        relevant to whether we want to extend the tcl_th_bndrs field (no).
      
      * I de-crufted the code in RnEnv.extendGlobalRdrEnv, by getting rid of the
        qual_gre code which said "Seems like 5 times as much work as it deserves!".
        Instead, RdrName.pickGREs makes the Internal names shadow External ones.
      
      * I moved the checkThLocalName cross-stage test to finishHsVar; previously
        we weren't doing the test at all in the OpApp case!
      
      * Quite a few changes (shortening the code) in the cross-stage checking code
        in TcExpr and RnSplice, notably to move the keepAlive call to the renamer
      
      One leftover piece:
      
      * In TcEnv I removed tcExtendGhciEnv and refactored
        tcExtendGlobalTyVars; this is really related to the next commit, but
        it was too hard to disentangle.
