Summary: The strings used in a WARNING pragma are captured via strings :: { Located ([AddAnn],[Located FastString]) } : STRING { sL1 $1 ([],[L (gl $1) (getSTRING $1)]) } .. The STRING token has a method getSTRINGs that returns the original source text for a string. A warning of the form {-# WARNING Logic , mkSolver , mkSimpleSolver , mkSolverForLogic , solverSetParams , solverPush , solverPop , solverReset , solverGetNumScopes , solverAssertCnstr , solverAssertAndTrack , solverCheck , solverCheckAndGetModel , solverGetReasonUnknown "New Z3 API support is still incomplete and fragile: \ \you may experience segmentation faults!" #-} returns the concatenated warning string rather than the original source. This patch now deals with all remaining instances of getSTRING to bring in a SourceText for each. This updates the haddock submodule as well, for the AST change. Summary: Add a reference note to each AnnKeywordId haddock comment so GHC developers will have an idea why they are there. Add a new test to ghc-api/annotations to serve as a template for other GHC developers when they need to update the parser. It provides output which checks that each SrcSpan that an annotation is attached to actually appears in the `ParsedSource`, and lists the individual annotations. The idea is that a developer writes a version of this which parses a sample file using whatever syntax is changed in Parser.y, and can then check that all the annotations come through. Summary: Previously, both Cabal and GHC defined the type PackageId, and we expected them to be roughly equivalent (but represented differently). This refactoring separates these two notions. A package ID is a user-visible identifier; it's the thing you write in a Cabal file, e.g. containers-0.9. The components of this ID are semantically meaningful, and decompose into a package name and a package vrsion. A package key is an opaque identifier used by GHC to generate linking symbols. Presently, it just consists of a package name and a package version, but pursuant to #9265 we are planning to extend it to record other information. Within a single executable, it uniquely identifies a package. It is *not* an InstalledPackageId, as the choice of a package key affects the ABI of a package (whereas an InstalledPackageId is computed after compilation.) Cabal computes a package key for the package and passes it to GHC using -package-name (now *extremely* misnamed). As an added bonus, we don't have to worry about shadowing anymore. As a follow on, we should introduce -current-package-key having the same role as -package-name, and deprecate the old flag. This commit is just renaming. The haddock submodule needed to be updated. This patch encompasses most of the basic infrastructure for GHCJS. It includes: * A new extension, -XJavaScriptFFI * A new architecture, ArchJavaScript * Parser and lexer support for 'foreign import javascript', only available under -XJavaScriptFFI, using ArchJavaScript. * As a knock-on, there is also a new 'WayCustom' constructor in DynFlags, so clients of the GHC API can add custom 'tags' to their built files. This should be useful for other users as well. The remaining changes are really just the resulting fallout, making sure all the cases are handled appropriately for DynFlags and Platform. Authored-by:

The main change here is that the Cmm parser now allows high-level cmm code with argument-passing and function calls. For example: foo ( gcptr a, bits32 b ) { if (b > 0) { // we can make tail calls passing arguments: jump stg_ap_0_fast(a); } return (x,y); } More details on the new cmm syntax are in Note [Syntax of .cmm files] in CmmParse.y. The old syntax is still more-or-less supported for those occasional code fragments that really need to explicitly manipulate the stack. However there are a couple of differences: it is now obligatory to give a list of live GlobalRegs on every jump, e.g. jump %ENTRY_CODE(Sp(0)) [R1]; Again, more details in Note [Syntax of .cmm files]. I have rewritten most of the .cmm files in the RTS into the new syntax, except for AutoApply.cmm which is generated by the genapply program: this file could be generated in the new syntax instead and would probably be better off for it, but I ran out of enthusiasm. Some other changes in this batch: - The PrimOp calling convention is gone, primops now use the ordinary NativeNodeCall convention. This means that primops and "foreign import prim" code must be written in high-level cmm, but they can now take more than 10 arguments. - CmmSink now does constant-folding (should fix #7219) - .cmm files now go through the cmmPipeline, and as a result we generate better code in many cases. All the object files generated for the RTS .cmm files are now smaller. Performance should be better too, but I haven't measured it yet. - RET_DYN frames are removed from the RTS, lots of code goes away - we now have some more canned GC points to cover unboxed-tuples with 2-4 pointers, which will reduce code size a little.

You can now say data {-# CTYPE "some_header.h" "the C type" #-} Foo = ... I think it's rare that this will actually be needed. If the header for a CAPI FFI import includes a void f(ctype x); prototype then ctype must already be defined. However, if the header only has #define f(p) p->j then the type need not be defined. But either way, it seems good practice for us to specify the header that we need.

In GHC, this provides an easy way to call a C function via a C wrapper. This is important when the function is really defined by CPP. Requires the new CApiFFI extension. Not documented yet, as it's still an experimental feature at this stage.

This is patch that adds support for interruptible FFI calls in the form of a new foreign import keyword 'interruptible', which can be used instead of 'safe' or 'unsafe'. Interruptible FFI calls act like safe FFI calls, except that the worker thread they run on may be interrupted. Internally, it replaces BlockedOnCCall_NoUnblockEx with BlockedOnCCall_Interruptible, and changes the behavior of the RTS to not modify the TSO_ flags on the event of an FFI call from a thread that was interruptible. It also modifies the bytecode format for foreign call, adding an extra Word16 to indicate interruptibility. The semantics of interruption vary from platform to platform, but the intent is that any blocking system calls are aborted with an error code. This is most useful for making function calls to system library functions that support interrupting. There is no support for pre-Vista Windows. There is a partner testsuite patch which adds several tests for this functionality.

This merge does not turn on the new codegen (which only compiles a select few programs at this point), but it does introduce some changes to the old code generator. The high bits: 1. The Rep Swamp patch is finally here. The highlight is that the representation of types at the machine level has changed. Consequently, this patch contains updates across several back ends. 2. The new Stg -> Cmm path is here, although it appears to have a fair number of bugs lurking. 3. Many improvements along the CmmCPSZ path, including: o stack layout o some code for infotables, half of which is right and half wrong o proc-point splitting

Most of the other users of the fptools build system have migrated to Cabal, and with the move to darcs we can now flatten the source tree without losing history, so here goes. The main change is that the ghc/ subdir is gone, and most of what it contained is now at the top level. The build system now makes no pretense at being multi-project, it is just the GHC build system. No doubt this will break many things, and there will be a period of instability while we fix the dependencies. A straightforward build should work, but I haven't yet fixed binary/source distributions. Changes to the Building Guide will follow, too.
