Ord should not default to ()
See http://hpaste.org/1711 . This defaulting is surprising and unuseful, since you can't define any interesting tests. The behaviour of GHC 6.6 (defaulting to Integer instead), or even not defaulting at all (e.g. by removing the monomorphism restriction or just not defaulting Ord), would be better.
