LD_STAGE0 variable, probably broken bootstrapping HEAD with HEAD

LD_STAGE0 is set from the boot compiler ld command field (which was removed in ecdc4353) so now I imagine that if you bootstrap with HEAD then LD_STAGE0 will fail to be set, but I don't know why we need this variable in the first place.
