`epoll` (and, allegedly, `kqueue`) supports the `EPOLLRDHUP` event which allows the user to register for peer-closed events of socket fds. Exposing this event would be particularly useful for server applications, where it is often useful to be able to tear down resources associated with connections which have been prematurely closed.
