Binary package of GHC 6.10.2 fails to install on debian etch (amd64)

Released package http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/6.10.2/ghc-6.10.2-x86_64-unknown-linux-libedit2.tar.bz2 fails to install on Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r3 with:

/usr/bin/strip: /home/sol/.install/ghc/ghc-6.10.2-inst/lib/ghc-6.10.2/ghc-pkg: File format not recognized

strip --version gives:

GNU strip 2.17 Debian GNU/Linux

uname -a gives:
