      why they're OK there. This allowed me to remove foldNameSet,

      I've documented the guarantees that stronglyConnCompFromEdgedVertices
      provides and commented on the call sites to explain why they are
      OK from determinism standpoint. I've changed the functions to
      nonDetUFM versions, so that it's explicit they could introduce
      nondeterminism.  I haven't defined container (VarSet, NameSet)
      specific versions, so that we have less functions to worry about.
      
      Test Plan: this is mostly just documentation,
      it should have no runtime effect

      Summary:
      foldUFM introduces unnecessary non-determinism that actually
      leads to different generated code as explained in
      Note [TrieMap determinism].
      
      As we're switching from UniqFM to UniqDFM here you might be
      concerned about performance. There's nothing that ./validate
      detects. nofib reports no change in Compile Allocations, but
      Compile Time got better on some tests and worse on some,
      yielding this summary:
      
              -1 s.d.                -----            -3.8%
              +1 s.d.                -----            +5.4%
              Average                -----            +0.7%
      
      This is not a fair comparison as the order of Uniques
      changes what GHC is actually doing. One benefit from making
      this deterministic is also that it will make the
      performance results more stable.

      This implements the ideas originally put forward in
      "System FC with Explicit Kind Equality" (ICFP'13).
      
      There are several noteworthy changes with this patch:
       * We now have casts in types. These change the kind
         of a type. See new constructor `CastTy`.
      
       * All types and all constructors can be promoted.
         This includes GADT constructors. GADT pattern matches
         take place in type family equations. In Core,
         types can now be applied to coercions via the
         `CoercionTy` constructor.
      
       * Coercions can now be heterogeneous, relating types
         of different kinds. A coercion proving `t1 :: k1 ~ t2 :: k2`
         proves both that `t1` and `t2` are the same and also that
         `k1` and `k2` are the same.
      
       * The `Coercion` type has been significantly enhanced.
         The documentation in `docs/core-spec/core-spec.pdf` reflects
         the new reality.
      
       * The type of `*` is now `*`. No more `BOX`.
      
       * Users can write explicit kind variables in their code,
         anywhere they can write type variables. For backward compatibility,
         automatic inference of kind-variable binding is still permitted.
      
       * The new extension `TypeInType` turns on the new user-facing
         features.
      
       * Type families and synonyms are now promoted to kinds. This causes
         trouble with parsing `*`, leading to the somewhat awkward new
         `HsAppsTy` constructor for `HsType`. This is dispatched with in
         the renamer, where the kind `*` can be told apart from a
         type-level multiplication operator. Without `-XTypeInType` the
         old behavior persists. With `-XTypeInType`, you need to import
         `Data.Kind` to get `*`, also known as `Type`.
      
       * The kind-checking algorithms in TcHsType have been significantly
         rewritten to allow for enhanced kinds.
      
       * The new features are still quite experimental and may be in flux.
      
       * TODO: Several open tickets: #11195, #11196, #11197, #11198, #11203.

      In some cases, the layout of the LANGUAGE/OPTIONS_GHC lines has been
      reorganized, while following the convention, to
      
      - place `{-# LANGUAGE #-}` pragmas at the top of the source file, before
        any `{-# OPTIONS_GHC #-}`-lines.
      
      - Moreover, if the list of language extensions fit into a single
        `{-# LANGUAGE ... -#}`-line (shorter than 80 characters), keep it on one
        line. Otherwise split into `{-# LANGUAGE ... -#}`-lines for each
        individual language extension. In both cases, try to keep the
        enumeration alphabetically ordered.
        (The latter layout is preferable as it's more diff-friendly)
      
      While at it, this also replaces obsolete `{-# OPTIONS ... #-}` pragma
      occurences by `{-# OPTIONS_GHC ... #-}` pragmas.

      The trouble here is that given
      
          {-# LANGUAGE DataKinds, TypeFamilies #-}
          data instance Foo a = Bar (Bar a)
      
      we want to get a sensible message that we can't use the promoted 'Bar'
      constructor until after its definition; it's a staging error.  Bud the
      staging mechanism that we use for vanilla data declarations don't work
      here.
      
      Solution is to perform strongly-connected component analysis on the
      instance declarations. But that in turn means that we need to track
      free-variable information on more HsSyn declarations, which is why
      so many files are touched.  All the changes are boiler-platey except
      the ones in TcInstDcls.

      I don't think the type distinction of declaring NameEnv with a newtype
      (as it was) is really useful to us. Moreover, VarEnv is a UniqFM, and
      I do sometimes want to build an envt with Ids and look up with Names.
      
      This may not be the last word on the subject.

      This patch implements three new features:
      * view patterns (syntax: expression -> pat in a pattern)
      * working versions of record wildcards and record puns
      See the manual for detailed descriptions.
      
      Other minor observable changes:
      * There is a check prohibiting local fixity declarations
        when the variable being fixed is not defined in the same let
      * The warn-unused-binds option now reports warnings for do and mdo stmts
      
      Implementation notes: 
      
      * The pattern renamer is now in its own module, RnPat, and the
      implementation is now in a CPS style so that the correct context is
      delivered to pattern expressions.
      
      * These features required a fairly major upheaval to the renamer.
      Whereas the old version used to collect up all the bindings from a let
      (or top-level, or recursive do statement, ...) and put them into scope
      before renaming anything, the new version does the collection as it
      renames.  This allows us to do the right thing with record wildcard
      patterns (which need to be expanded to see what names should be
      collected), and it allows us to implement the desired semantics for view
      patterns in lets.  This change had a bunch of domino effects brought on
      by fiddling with the top-level renaming.
      
      * Prior to this patch, there was a tricky bug in mkRecordSelId in HEAD,
      which did not maintain the invariant necessary for loadDecl.  See note
      [Tricky iface loop] for details.

      This patch is a start on removing import lists and generally tidying
      up the top of each module.  In addition to removing import lists:
      
         - Change DATA.IOREF -> Data.IORef etc.
         - Change List -> Data.List etc.
         - Remove $Id$
         - Update copyrights
         - Re-order imports to put non-GHC imports last
         - Remove some unused and duplicate imports

      Most of the other users of the fptools build system have migrated to
      Cabal, and with the move to darcs we can now flatten the source tree
      without losing history, so here goes.
      
      The main change is that the ghc/ subdir is gone, and most of what it
      contained is now at the top level.  The build system now makes no
      pretense at being multi-project, it is just the GHC build system.
      
      No doubt this will break many things, and there will be a period of
      instability while we fix the dependencies.  A straightforward build
      should work, but I haven't yet fixed binary/source distributions.
      Changes to the Building Guide will follow, too.

      WARNING: this is a big commit.  You might want 
      	to wait a few days before updating, in case I've

      	However, if any of the changes are what you wanted,

      This commit does three main things:
      
      1. A re-organisation of the way that GHC handles bindings in HsSyn.
         This has been a bit of a mess for quite a while.  The key new
         types are
      
      	-- Bindings for a let or where clause
      	data HsLocalBinds id
      	  = HsValBinds (HsValBinds id)
      	  | HsIPBinds  (HsIPBinds id)
      	  | EmptyLocalBinds
      
      	-- Value bindings (not implicit parameters)
      	data HsValBinds id
      	  = ValBindsIn  -- Before typechecking
      		(LHsBinds id) [LSig id]	-- Not dependency analysed
      					-- Recursive by default
      
      	  | ValBindsOut	-- After typechecking
      		[(RecFlag, LHsBinds id)]-- Dependency analysed
      
      2. Implement Mark Jones's idea of increasing polymoprhism
         by using type signatures to cut the strongly-connected components
         of a recursive group.  As a consequence, GHC no longer insists
         on the contexts of the type signatures of a recursive group
         being identical.
      
         This drove a significant change: the renamer no longer does dependency
         analysis.  Instead, it attaches a free-variable set to each binding,
         so that the type checker can do the dep anal.  Reason: the typechecker
         needs to do *two* analyses:
      	one to find the true mutually-recursive groups
      		(which we need so we can build the right CoreSyn)
      	one to find the groups in which to typecheck, taking
      		account of type signatures
      
      3. Implement non-ground SPECIALISE pragmas, as promised, and as
         requested by Remi and Ross.  Certainly, this should fix the 
         current problem with GHC, namely that if you have
      	g :: Eq a => a -> b -> b
         then you can now specialise thus
      	SPECIALISE g :: Int -> b -> b
          (This didn't use to work.)
      
         However, it goes further than that.  For example:
      	f :: (Eq a, Ix b) => a -> b -> b
         then you can make a partial specialisation
      	SPECIALISE f :: (Eq a) => a -> Int -> Int
      
          In principle, you can specialise f to *any* type that is
          "less polymorphic" (in the sense of subsumption) than f's 
          actual type.  Such as
      	SPECIALISE f :: Eq a => [a] -> Int -> Int
          But I haven't tested that.
      
          I implemented this by doing the specialisation in the typechecker
          and desugarer, rather than leaving around the strange SpecPragmaIds,
          for the specialiser to find.  Indeed, SpecPragmaIds have vanished 
          altogether (hooray).
      
          Pragmas in general are handled more tidily.  There's a new
          data type HsBinds.Prag, which lives in an AbsBinds, and carries
          pragma info from the typechecker to the desugarer.
      
      
      Smaller things
      
      - The loop in the renamer goes via RnExpr, instead of RnSource.
        (That makes it more like the type checker.)
      
      - I fixed the thing that was causing 'check_tc' warnings to be 
        emitted.

      1.  Add instance information to :info command.  GHCi now prints out
          which instances a type or class belongs to, when you use :i
      
      2.  Tidy up printing of unqualified names in user output.
          Previously Outputable.PrintUnqualified was
      	type PrintUnqualified = Name -> Bool
          but it's now
      	type PrintUnqualified = ModuleName -> OccName -> Bool
          This turns out to be tidier even for Names, and it's now also usable
          when printing IfaceSyn stuff in GHCi, eliminating a grevious hack.
      
      3.  On the way to doing this, Simon M had the great idea that we could
          get rid of the DeclPool holding pen, which held declarations read from
          interface files but not yet type-checked.   We do this by eagerly
          populating the TypeEnv with thunks what, when poked, do the type
          checking.   This is just a logical continuation of lazy import
          mechanism we've now had for some while.
      
      The InstPool and RulePool still exist, but I plan to get rid of them in
      the same way.  The new scheme does mean that more rules get sucked in than
      before, because previously the TypeEnv was used to mean "this thing was needed"
      and hence to control which rules were sucked in.  But now the TypeEnv is
      populated more eagerly => more rules get sucked in.  However this problem
      will go away when I get rid of the Inst and Rule pools.
      
      I should have kept these changes separate, but I didn't.  Change (1)
      affects mainly
      	TcRnDriver, HscMain, CompMan, InteractiveUI
      whereas change (3) is more wide ranging.

      This massive commit transfers to the HEAD all the stuff that
      Simon and Tim have been doing on Template Haskell.  The
      meta-haskell-branch is no more!
      
      WARNING: make sure that you
      
        * Update your links if you are using link trees.
          Some modules have been added, some have gone away.
      
        * Do 'make clean' in all library trees.
          The interface file format has changed, and you can
          get strange panics (sadly) if GHC tries to read old interface files:
          e.g.  ghc-5.05: panic! (the `impossible' happened, GHC version 5.05):
      	  Binary.get(TyClDecl): ForeignType
      
        * You need to recompile the rts too; Linker.c has changed
      
      
      However the libraries are almost unaltered; just a tiny change in
      Base, and to the exports in Prelude.
      
      
      NOTE: so far as TH itself is concerned, expression splices work
      fine, but declaration splices are not complete.

      The main structural change: renaming and typechecking have to be
      interleaved, because we can't rename stuff after a declaration splice
      until after we've typechecked the stuff before (and the splice
      itself).
      
      * Combine the renamer and typecheker monads into one
      	(TcRnMonad, TcRnTypes)
        These two replace TcMonad and RnMonad
      
      * Give them a single 'driver' (TcRnDriver).  This driver
        replaces TcModule.lhs and Rename.lhs
      
      * The haskell-src library package has a module
      	Language/Haskell/THSyntax
        which defines the Haskell data type seen by the TH programmer.
      
      * New modules:
      	hsSyn/Convert.hs 	converts THSyntax -> HsSyn
      	deSugar/DsMeta.hs 	converts HsSyn -> THSyntax
      
      * New module typecheck/TcSplice type-checks Template Haskell splices.
      
      		-------------
      		Linking stuff

      * ByteCodeLink has been split into
      	ByteCodeLink	(which links)
      	ByteCodeAsm	(which assembles)
      
      * New module ghci/ObjLink is the object-code linker.
      
      * compMan/CmLink is removed entirely (was out of place)
        Ditto CmTypes (which was tiny)
      
      * Linker.c initialises the linker when it is first used (no need to call
        initLinker any more).  Template Haskell makes it harder to know when
        and whether to initialise the linker.

      * Instead of explicitly gathering constraints in the LIE
      	tcExpr :: RenamedExpr -> TcM (TypecheckedExpr, LIE)
        we now dump the constraints into a mutable varabiable carried
        by the monad, so we get
      	tcExpr :: RenamedExpr -> TcM TypecheckedExpr
      
        Much less clutter in the code, and more efficient too.

      		Remove "SysNames"
      		-----------------
      
      Because the renamer and the type checker were entirely separate,
      we had to carry some rather tiresome implicit binders (or "SysNames")
      along inside some of the HsDecl data structures.  They were both
      tiresome and fragile.
      
      Now that the typechecker and renamer are more intimately coupled,
      we can eliminate SysNames (well, mostly... default methods still
      carry something similar).
      
      		-------------
      		Clean up HsPat
      		-------------
      
      One big clean up is this: instead of having two HsPat types (InPat and
      OutPat), they are now combined into one.  This is more consistent with
      the way that HsExpr etc is handled; there are some 'Out' constructors
      for the type checker output.
      
      So:
      	HsPat.InPat	--> HsPat.Pat
      	HsPat.OutPat	--> HsPat.Pat
      	No 'pat' type parameter in HsExpr, HsBinds, etc
      
      	Constructor patterns are nicer now: they use
      		HsPat.HsConDetails
      	for the three cases of constructor patterns:
      		prefix, infix, and record-bindings
      
      	The *same* data type HsConDetails is used in the type
      	declaration of the data type (HsDecls.TyData)
      
      Lots of associated clean-up operations here and there.  Less code.
      Everything is wonderful.

      Fix a problem with the 'it' variable in GHCi.  New bindings for 'it'
      were getting confused with old bindings, because we always used the
      same 'it' name.
      
      Now, we generate a new unique for 'it' each time around.
      
      Also, make sure that any existing variables shadowed by new
      command-line bindings are correctly removed from the environments to
      avoid space leaks.
