Don't feed mkdependC -D__GNUC__ + fix-fix to mkdependC

Delete temp files when through with it

- automatically-generated verbatim.c shouldn't be in the repository
- CLEAN_FILES += verbatim.c

fix SCRIPT_SUBST_VARS.

Use $(CPP), not $(RAWCPP).  This involves saving the cpp output to a
temporary file.  This change should fix 'make depend' on RedHat 5.

- Handle \begin{code} ... \end{code} + <code> ... </code>

Add verbatim for SGML.

Don't try to generate stdout files if using -accept-output.  It didn't
work anyway: a call to pop had stomped on the variable containing the
filename before it was used, setting it to the empty string.  The call
to touch then failed with a syntax error.

This behaviour seems more useful: sometimes you really don't want to
check the stdout and/or stderr, so you just don't create the file.

When needed , define __linux__ to silence cpp warnings
