LTS bindists
It would be nice to have a release that provides long-term support for the bindist portion of a release. That means this is unrelated to code backports, but may include:
- creating new bindists for an existing platform (e.g. a new debian version)
- this would be optimally done by GHC devs in collaboration with GHCup/Stack maintainers
- motivation: recent Fedora dropping ncurses-compat-libs (and then adding it back later) made me think that this would simply be good form to do prematurely
- creating new bindists for a new platform (e.g. void linux)
- this would have to be initiated by a contributor
- GHC devs would however support the PR by investigating and fixing test issues (to an extent)
- motivation: the "unknown linux" in GHCup is already the most fragile part of the redistribution, so adding new distros in case they turn out to be popular amongst Haskellers can make sense
- backporting bindist code fixes (e.g. configure or Makefile issues)
The support window should be at least 3 years, in my opinion. Point 1. and 2. would also be forward ported to the latest GHC release and/or the upcoming one.
